Dehradun, Dec 11: The 9th edition of the Sustainable Mountain Development Summit (SMDS) commenced today here in the Uttarakhand capital in a virtual mode hosted by the Sustainable Development Forum of Uttarakhand (SDFU).
With this year’s theme being ‘Emerging Pathways for Building a Resilient Post-Covid-19 Mountain Economy: Adaptation, Innovation and Acceleration’, the summit will focus on the overall objective of building pathways toward a resilient and sustainable mountain economy in the Indian Himalayan Region in the context of a post COVID-19 scenario and Climate Change. The inaugural ceremony was graced by Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Trivendra Singh Rawat as Chief Guest and the Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad K. Sangma as Guest of Honour. The welcome address was given by the summit’s Chairperson Dr. Rajendra Dobhal and inaugural presidential address by President, Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI) P D Rai.
The Uttarakhand CM emphasized on the need for having a ‘Himalayan Vision’  to integrate policies, places, products and personalities in making a roadmap for sustainable development of the Indian Himalayan Region. The Meghalaya CM while expressing concern about the ill effects of COVID pandemic on people and economy, stated that as most of the Himalayan region is covered with forests, people of these states must be prepared for all types of mountain disasters and work for conserving its rich natural resources.
Academicians, NGOs and members of the civil society will be participating in the summit which will continue till December 14 spread across eight sessions.
