NAHARLAGUN, Dec 12:  The 21st meeting of the Arunachal Pradesh Consumer Protection Council was held here at the Conference Hall of the Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Affairs, Naharlagun under the chairmanship of Kamlung Mossang, Minister for Legal Metrology & CA.
Discussing on necessity of testing laboratories in the state to ascertain quality of products, the Minister appealed to business community to remain responsible citizens in the interest of the common consumers and avoid bringing spurious and sub-standard products.  He also dwelt at length on the advantage and merits of being honest in every aspect of life including dealing with consumer products.
While appreciating the Department of Legal Metrology for doing appreciable work despite many constraints, he suggested taking up of awareness programme in collaboration and joining various functionaries in events like school week, children’s day, house competition, etc., even during political campaign, local festivals besides important occasions like National Consumer Day, World Consumer Rights Day, Republic Day, Statehood Day, etc.
He also suggested the Department for extending the Consumer Helpline with toll free telephone numbers in the entire district headquarters for receiving consumer complaints and resolving cases out of court.
Later, he launched the whatsapp and facebook account of the Department. These social media will benefit the common consumer in seeking redressal of their grievances.
The Secretary of the Department, Yeshi Wangmu Ringu who is also holding the Secretary Finance portfolio, further suggested the Department to include all the major components of activities including proposal for consumer awareness activities in SADA, in future.
She gave due stress on awareness programmes and suggested joining Sarkar aapke dwar programme so as to disseminate the knowledge on consumer protection to grassroots level.
Controller Legal Metrology-cum-Director Consumer Affairs, Hoktum Ori, highlighted the achievements made by the department in the last few years and also the obstacles being faced by the Department in implementation of consumer protection laws in the State.
Hoksum Ori, Member State Commission, suggested conducting awareness programmes in collaboration with NGOs like APWWS.
Professor R. C. Parida, Deptt. of Commerce, RGU supported establishment of a testing lab in the state especially for food items. However, on this, the Secretary LM& CA suggested the Department for preparing an estimate in consultation with the Director Health Services.
