ITANAGAR, Dec 11: The Students United Movement of All Arunachal (SUMAA) and All Changlang District Students Union (ACDSU) have strongly condemned the announcement of the State Government to grant Permanent Residence Certificate (PRC) to few Non-APST tribes of Lekang constituency.
“If PRC is given to Non- APST in Arunachal Pradesh then there will be stiff resistance from every corner of the state including SUMAA team,” asserted SUMAA general secretary, Suraj Ligu.
It also quashed the ground on which the state government is offering PRC, saying that the claims made by the Non-APST people of Lekang area is baseless.
“The duties of an elected leader should be the development and safeguarding the right of indigenous people rather than destroying and polluting it,” it asserted adding that state government must revoke the decision immediately in the interest of indigenous people of the state.
It further urged the public, civil society and the student's communities like Tai, Khamti, Singphos to raise their voice against the discriminatory policies of the government adding that otherwise, time is not far when Arunachal will become next Tripura.
Meanwhile, ACDSU also strongly opposed the move to grant PRC to Gorkhas settled in Vijoynagar under Changlang district. Affirming to oppose any move aimed at changing the procedure for issuance of PRC, it alleged that no wider consultations with any stakeholder of the affected area were carried out before announcing the decision.
“ The Gorkhas were brought to Arunachal on lease for 30 years and any move to convert such lease will go against the accord made earlier," it alleged. ACDSU, GS, Chumtu Tunghkhang expressed fear that the granting of PRC to Gorkhas would eventually lead to more such demands in the near future which will distort the demography of the district.
“ The land has been our ancient resource and we have strong cultural and traditional ties with it, and any move to violate such ties would need consensus to be built with the indigenous populace of the land first,” he asserted.
He also noted that the process of granting PRC has been done with undue haste without Joint High Power Committee( JHPC) process being completed.
