PASIGHAT, Jan 15: A month-long awareness campaign on protection of Adi customary laws and orientation of the Adi Kebang Ayon (AKA) organized by the East Siang unit of Bogum Bokang Kebang (BBK), the judiciary wing of the Adi Baane Kebang (ABK) kicked off from the Mirem village community hall on Thursday.
ABK and BBK office bearers, common people and Gaon Burahs attended the event. ABK (Apex) Secretary General Okom Yosung while clearing the confusion on the roles played by ABK and BBK clarified that since 2008 BBK functions as the custodian of justice in Adi society entrusted with the duty of interpreting its customary laws. It was decided that from now onwards the Village Kebang Secretary in each Adi village will be the President of BBK at village level and to this effect the East Siang unit appointed the respective Village Secretaries in Bilat Circle as village-level Presidents. The policy of appointing Village Secretaries is to make BBK’s network more stronger for implementing Adi Kebang Ayon (AKA) in Adi villages uniformly where the village GBs will be its ex-officio members. In the inaugural campaign, a good number of GBs and other senior customary law experts (Kebang Abu) shared their ideas on existing social issues for larger welfare of the Adis and on issues like translation of the AKA into English version, its codification etc. An 11-member committee was formed for Bilat Circle headed by a Chairman which will compile and draft their report to submit the same to BBK, East Siang unit on or before February 28 which in turn will be submitted to the AKA Amendment Committee for final amendment.
The awareness campaign will continue in all Circles/Blocks of East Siang till February 12.
