ITANAGAR, Feb 25: In yet another case of attack on the people of Arunachal in Assam, Modam Dini, a senior public leader and his brother and former Anchal Samiti Chairperson in Likabali, Henken Dini were allegedly attacked by a mob on their way to Dibrugarh on February 18 last.
The incident occurred near Borborua in Assam around 6:30 pm on the said day when they were on their way to Dibrugarh to see a relative admitted to the ICU at a hospital.
One of the victims, Modam Dini alleged at a press conference that he was brutally attacked by two people which later inflated to a crowd of more than 50 following a minor accident. “We were then heading towards Dibrugarh to attend a relative admitted to the ICU at Sristi Hospital. But when we reached the Borborua highway, a speeding white Honda car bearing registration number AS-06P 6393, in an attempt to overtake us from the wrong side ended up hitting our vehicle (Mahindra Scorpio),” Dini informed, pointing out that it was the Honda car driver who caused the accident. “As a responsible person and being a community leader, I stopped my vehicle and came down to see if anyone was injured or the car sustained any damage due to the impact,” he said.
Dini claimed that the pair in the Honda car initially responded calmly, but after ‘discovering’ his car is AR registered, went on rampage and started punching him in the face without any provocation.“My brother Henken Dini tried to control the situation, but the furious mob started beating him too. As a result of this, me along with my wife and my brother sustained multiple injuries,” Dini added. He stated that despite his wife’s repeated pleas for mercy and also even after an offer to settle the case amicably, the mob went on with the assault.
Dini also accused the OC, Borborua Police Station Manoj Borua for not filing a First Information Report (FIR) and favouring the duo in the case as they belonged to Assam despite having sufficient evidence available to file a case against them.
Dini also claimed that the vehicle (Honda Brio) driven by the accused had no insurance coverage when he examined it, but police seized his Mahindra Scorpio instead which had proper insurance and documents. “Instead of helping us, the Officer In-charge continued to pressurise us to pay the duo a sum of Rs 140,000 for repair needs of the vehicle and I was forced to pay a sum of Rs 33,000,” Dini said.He also went on to allege that he overheard a conversation wherein the Officer-in-charge scolded his Assamese friend who accompanied him to the police station saying, “Why you are trying to save these Arunachalee people instead of favouring our own Assamese when you are a local? ” “It was only after the matter was brought to the notice of Superintendent of Police, Dibrugarh we were able to recover the money extracted from us. The SP after taking cognizance of the case directed the OC, Borborua to return the money and file an FIR,” he informed.
Meanwhile, President, Jigo Yego Students Union (JYSU) Nyape Taipodia who accompanied the victim in the press conference urged the state government to hold talks with its Assam counterpart over the repeated attacks on the people of Arunachal who have to visit Assam for medical-related matters and other purposes.
Stating that mere transfer would not be enough, he demanded immediate suspension of OC, Borborua for mishandling the case and arrest the accused and all others involved in the attack. The union has also threatened to impose a ban on the celebration of Malinithan Mela scheduled to be held next month if the state government fails to meet their demands.
Earlier, JYSU observed a 12-hour Likabali bandh on Monday to protest against the brutal attack and has demanded a concrete step against repeated harassments of Arunachalees visiting Assam.
