New Delhi, Mar 27: The Union Home Secretary has written to all States/UTs to take immediate steps to provide adequate support, including food and shelter to the migrant agricultural labourers, industrial workers and other unorganized sector workers during the ongoing nationwide 21-day Covid-19 lockdown.
The states/UTs have also been advised to take adequate steps to ensure that students and working women from other states are allowed to continue living in their existing accommodation. The advisory stressed that in order to mitigate the current difficult situation faced by the unorganized sector workers, particularly the stranded migrant workers, states/UTs need to explore measures by involving various agencies, including the NGOs to provide food and shelter with basic amenities like clean drinking water, sanitation etc. It has also been advised to make these vulnerable groups aware of the measures taken by the government including the provisions of free food grains & other essential items through PDS and streamlining of the distribution system which would help prevent avoidable movements.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has also advised the states/UTs to ensure hotels, rented accommodations, hostels etc., continue remaining functional and delivery of essential items is streamlined so that students, working women hostel inmates etc. may continue staying in their existing facilities while observing the precautions.
Besides reminding the responsibility to ensure supply of essential goods and services, the states/UTs have been directed to enforce the lockdown strictly and take action against the violators under various provisions of law. PIB Itanagar
