MEDO, Aug 10: Medo in Lohit district is gradually emerging as a major hub of healthy and sustainable agriculture with organic promotion leading to bumper harvest of pumpkin.
The marked improvement in output has been witnessed after the introduction of the Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) concept of farming with stress on organic methods. “We have a record growth of pumpkin which are now exported to Nogaon in Assam. I extend deep gratitude to DC Prince Dhawan who has been time and again backing, motivating and supporting us to promote organic farming and gave us the license to export the produce. Our farmers are enthusiastically producing despite the Covid pandemic and lockdown,” informed Ranjit Minin, a farmer from Medo. Equally, taro root or kacchu, water pumpkin, ginger and maize will be cultivated in subsequent seasons after the pumpkin season, he added.
“We have so far transported approximately 100 tons since July 20 and today also 20 tons in one full body truck and 10 tons in another truck are loading to get it transported to Assam. At the rate of Rs 8 per kg it is sold to the buyers (middlemen) and a farmer can earn a whopping Rs 40,000 to 50,000 per season which is a good income,” another farmer disclosed.
Retired CE PHED and farmer Lupalum Kri told that pumpkin is one of the major cash crops after tea, ginger, and mustard etc. A farmer recorded a turnover of Rs 6 lakhs by selling pumpkin last year, he revealed. Terming Medo as an emerging agriculture hub, Deputy Director (Agri.) Deepak Barman said the department has been getting maximum revenue from APMC Medo to the tune of Rs 10 to 12 lakhs with Rs 1.50 lakhs annually from Pumpkin alone.
