ITANAGAR, May 13: The 2021 edition of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), the food security welfare scheme of the Central government first launched across the nation in March 2020 was kicked off today in the state capital by Mayor, Itanagar Municipal Corporation Tame Phassang at the Rajbhawan Fair Price Shop.
The state’s Department of Food and Civil Supplies is implementing the scheme which will provide additional quota of food grains to the entitled beneficiaries for the months of May and June. Deputy Commissioner ICR, Talo Potom, District Food & Civil Supplies Officer (DF&CSO), Itanagar Bengia Amit, corporators and officials attended the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Mayor appreciated the DC, DF&CSO and their teams for implementing the scheme during the ongoing ICR lockdown. “The quantity of rice may be less but the help in this tough time is really praiseworthy,” Phassang said while appealing the denizens to follow all Covid SOPs while availing the PMGKAY benefits. He further urged the capital residents not to panic about shortage of essential goods and assured that the state government is taking all necessary measures to avoid any food grain crisis.
Elaborating on the scheme, the DF&CSO informed that at least 70,647 beneficiaries under Priority Household (PHH) and Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) schemes will receive 5 kg rice per person per household. The scheme will be available at 123 Fair Price Shops in the capital, he informed. While assuring about availability of rice and other essential food items, Amit informed that for the next three months rice will be procured from FCI Karsingsa and advance payment has also been made for LPG and petroleum. “This time there are no restrictions on movement of essential goods. So there will be no issue of shortages,” he assured.
The Union Cabinet on May 5, 2021 gave its approval for distributing additional food grains for the months of May and June to the National Food Security Act (NFSA) beneficiaries under PMGKAY Phase III.
