Mebo, Aug 13: Large-scale erosion on the banks of Siang river over the past few months in Mebo Sub-division of East Siang district is proving to be an imminent threat to the Sigar Village Primary School putting it on the verge of total collapse.
While a large portion of the school had already been washed away by the marauding Siang, the remaining portion has also become extremely vulnerable. As a last-ditch attempt, a portion of the school has been dismantled by the villagers. Not only the school, half of which has already vanished, many houses, structures and trees have been engulfed by the river affecting many families in the region.
“We are shocked to see our school on the verge of a total collapse and we want an urgent rebuilding so that our studies are not hampered,” a student of Class I appealed.
Sigar village is located 14 km away from ADC Mebo and geographical alteration of the area affecting its vast crop lands, vegetation and human dwellings due to continuous erosion caused by the mighty Siang along with frequent floods have been a steady feature since many years.
During the last decade, many villages in Mebo Sub-division had to be shifted to escape erosion.
