NAMSAI, Nov 1:  A person was killed at Juna-3 Notun Gaon, Tengapani  Mukh village, under Namsai district in the wee hours of Sunday as Assam police reportedly fired in self-defence. 
The incident occurred when a team of Assam police from Chapakhowa under Tinsukia District (Assam) on prior information to Namsai Police led an operation to arrest a person identified as  Prokhanto  Bora. 
"Instead of cooperating with the police, the alleged accused attacked the police team with a machete. Despite warning, the accused continued to attack the team,  so in self defence,  police had to retaliate and fired a bullet," informed Additional  SP Chapakhowa, Assam, SR Saikia over telephone.
There was some inputs that alleged accused Prokhanto  Bora who resided in Assam –Arunachal boundary village of Juna-3 Notun Gaon under Namsai district had links with some militant group and also  had  a 303-Rifle in his possession, said Saikia.
"There was no intention to kill anyone. We have informed about our reason for the movement inside Arunachal territory  to the concern Superintendent of Police of Namsai district. The incident occurred only in self defence," clarified the  Adl SP.
However, the elder son of the deceased has narrated a different story. "The Assam police along with commandos arrived at our home around 1:30 am and without any warning, my father was shot at while he was opening the door on the call of the police personnel."
 It is also alleged that after killing  the deceased, police also tortured the elder son.
 "The Assam police and commandos assaulted me with the butt of their guns, took me to Namsai and quizzed me about illegal arms of which l and my family have no idea," said the son.
Meanwhile, Namsai Police led by SP,  Dr. DW Thongon, OC CB Rai and magistrate rushed to the spot. The dead body was brought to the District Hospital  Namsai for Postmortem Sunday evening.
