ITANAGAR, Jul 2: Itanagar Capital Region Deputy Commissioner Talo Potom today convened a virtual meeting with MLA Itanagar Techi Kaso, IMC mayor Tame Phassang, Deputy Mayor Biri Basang, corporators and officials to discuss the way forward in preparation of the Flood and Landslide Action Plan of the state capital.
Director, Disaster Management Komkar Dulom, Administrative Officers, In-charge DDMO Tem Kaya and representatives from the Remote Sensing wing of the Department of Science and Technology took part in the meeting which among other things deliberated on the issue of incorporating the map/atlas of flood and landslide prone areas of the ICR. Contending that disasters in the ICR are mostly man made, Kaso stressed on the need to contain the illegal activities like earth cutting etc. Echoing the MLA’s words, Phassang assured IMC’s cooperation for the overall development of the ICR. The Director, DM opined for district-wise Flood and Landslide Action Plans to lessen the annual loss of lives and properties and sought constructive suggestions from every stakeholder in the making of the Action Plans. Sharing their views, the IMC corporators stressed on the need of proper awareness regarding the above issues and suggested joint inspection by the District Administration and stakeholders to identify the vulnerable locations. All the participants while sharing their suggestions for the Action Plan cited earth cutting as the root cause of recurring landslides in the ICR and called for a complete ban. Representatives from the DST informed that Geological Survey of India (GSI) is the central nodal agency for landslide mapping.
Earlier, the DC informed that the said Action Plan will be prepared incorporating the map/atlas of flood and landslide prone areas of the ICR and submitted to the Department of Disaster Management. DIPRO
