Deomali, Nov 21: Acting swiftly on the complaints received from a number of businessmen, shopkeepers and public leaders of Deomali area that they were receiving extortion calls from a suspected NSCN (U) cadre, Deomali police along with the Army in a joint operation today in the early hours nabbed the culprit.
During the course of investigation which was initiated after a complaint vide Deomali PS C/No.13/20 u/s 120(B)/384/507 IPC R/W Section 10/13 UA(P) Act was lodged on November 20, it was revealed that as per direction of the extortionist, some amounts had already been paid through bank transactions. Based on specific intelligence input, SDPO Deomali Topha Wangsu and DSP (Hq) Longding Banghang Tangjang raided the house of the suspect in Chattong village under Kanubari Circle, resulting in the arrest of OGW, NSCN (U) Pongsa Wanpan. Extortion money amounting to Rs.58,200, one mobile phone, a cheque book bearing the account number where the extortion money was deposited and some ID cards were recovered from his possession.
The accused and his brother SS Pvt Honkai Wangpan, also an active NSCN (U) cadre had been running the extortion racket at Deomali Subdivision of Tirap district since many days. With this arrest, a major extortion racket in the area has been busted.
