Launches destruction drive of psychoactive plants

YAZALI, Apr 23: As part of the ongoing efforts of Lower Subansiri District Administration to curb the menace of drugs in the district, an awareness-cum-cannabis destruction drive was launched today by Deputy Commissioner Somcha Lowang.
Spearheaded by Superintendent, Tax Excise and Narcotics Takhe Rinyo, the campaign aims to rope in PRI members, SHGs and NGOs in assisting the DA in destroying the uncontrolled growth of psychoactive plants such as cannabis/bhang/marijuana that grow naturally in many parts of the district and creating awareness amongst youths about the crippling effects of drugs. Armed with daos and machetes the team comprising HoDs, SHG and PRI members and students started the drive from Potin tri-junction extending up to Yazali township area, the main hub of wild cannabis. Each Panchayat segment was allotted a stretch of the road and the Panchayat and SHG members and GBs uprooted the cannabis along the road.
While interacting with the participants, the DC called for a mass movement against the menace. “The upsurge of Covid cases in the state has definitely restricted our activities in carrying out anti-drug awareness programmes. But we can put forth our best efforts on an individual level by staying alert about suspicious activities and reporting them to the police and administration immediately,” she added while informing about the arrest of drug peddlers from three  different locations of Ziro. She further advised the Panchayat bodies to adopt a resolution to destroy cannabis in their respective jurisdictions.
ADC Yachuli Toko Babu, ZPMs and NSS unit of St. Claret College also participated in the drive. DIPRO
