TEZU, May 17: The Modern Gallery housed in the Lohit district museum, which is considered a premier of its kind in Eastern Arunachal is set for a revamp. The chief objectives of modernizing the gallery is to preserve and promote graphics, antique, photographs and art works dating back to 1956 till date. The museum is rich with precious artifacts but with the passage of time, ruins are visible due to leakage in roof, poor upkeep and other factors, department sources said. The plan now is to develop the gallery and replace the existing dilapidated SPT building of the early sixties. Showcasing the myriad artifacts, specimens and relics of the Mishmi, Khampti, Singpho and other tribes, the museum has a lot to offer.
“Rs 50 lakh was sanctioned by former Minister, Art & Culture, Dr Mohesh Chai in 2018 and the deadline to complete the works by April could not be reached due to the lockdown,” rued DRO J Rando. Installation of Diorama, TV and other beautification tasks are expected to be completed after normalcy, he added. Executive Engineer PWD Er. Tamut Gao who inspected the progress of the construction has assured completion of the remaining work soon. Briefing the history of the museum, Karna, a curator said that the artifact collection was good that included a large number of antique pieces, but the 1962 Indo-China war forced the valuables to be shifted to Mohanbari in Dibrugarh where most of them were subsequently lost.
“Despite that the museum still has a large range of valuables to showcase and its development will ensure safety of the precious materials and attract more tourists and researchers in coming days,” the curator exuded hope.
