 In a landmark initiative, the Lohit district administration has made functional the much – awaited Rehabilitation Centre, which was built way back in 2002 in the premises of Zonal Hospital.

Over 10 addicts from Lohit and Anjaw districts reportedly have been admitted for rehabilitation.

Inaugurating the Centre on Friday last, Deputy Commissioner, Danish Ashraf expressed serious concern over the adverse effects of opium, other contraband substance and rising addiction among youths.

“Though consumption of opium is rooted culturally in Mishmi society but it sounds illogical how use of opium would promote and preserve one’s culture. Rampant opium cultivation has to be stopped and should go for alternative crop to annihilate its impending threat. Our administration is committed to assist for choicest crop to replace opium cultivation and to rehabilitate addicts for better tomorrow,” the DC added.

Speaking on the occasion, DMO, Dr S Chai informed that a total of 44 addicts were registered out of which ten were admitted due to shortage of seats in the Rehabilitation centre.

 We have shortage of doctors, nurses and other paramedic staffers still we have taken the onus to rehabilitate them on charitable means, added Chai requesting the patients to willingly cooperate.

Dr S Towang SMO who is the in – charge of the rehabilitation centre also highlighted the effect and causes of addiction through power point presentation.
