TEZU, Apr 3: As part of the ongoing ‘Airgun Surrender Abhiyan’ launched by the state’s Department of Environment & Forest that kicked off from Lumdung in East Kameng district on March 17 last and in an effort to intensify it further, Lohit District Administration has issued a circular appealing the district’s citizens to relinquish their airguns and portable power chain saws at the Tezu, Sunpura and Wakro Police Stations within April 30.
“We have taken the initiative following the decision taken by Environment & Forest Minister Mama Natung in a meeting held on March 18 last. The airguns are being used indiscriminately to kill birds which should be stopped immediately,” DC Marge Sora said. Along with airguns, portable power chain saws used rampantly for cutting rainforest trees and vegetation should also be surrendered without delay, the DC added. The ill effects of deforestation are starkly visible with water resources of the district gradually drying up. Sukha Nallah, Tezu Nallah and several river streams have remained dry during winter due to massive destruction of vegetation at both sides of the river and the DA has felt that surrendering of power chain saws is the need of the hour to avoid further deforestation.
It needs mentioning that the state government has already banned the use of portable chain saws as a measure to check depletion of natural vegetation and environmental degradation.
