YINGKIONG, Apr 30: Pursuing the objective of discouraging the opium cultivators of Upper Siang district to relinquish the illegal practice, District Administration led by DC Yingkiong and ADC Mariyang in collaboration with the police department headed by SP carried out a two-day opium-destruction-cum-awareness drive in Damro, Adi Pasi (Bine, Sikko and Sibuk), Millang and Dalbing villages of Mariyang Subdivision.
Large areas under poppy cultivation were destroyed by the team led by EAC Mariyang Khoda Lasa and OCPS Mariyang K Dameng. Unlike the last operation in Pongging and Jeru villages when there were stiff protests from villagers, this time the locals extended cooperation and in some places even voluntarily destroyed the opium plants which has been viewed by the administration as a good sign. 
According to the DA and District Police, more such operations and awareness drives will be conducted in the region from time to time.
