NAHARLAGUN, May 12: The Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Affairs in its effort to thwart over pricing during the current lockdown, has intensified surprise inspection throughout the state and booked 22 errant traders today for selling packaged commodities at exorbitant price.
The Controller of Legal Metrology, Hoktum Ori earlier instructed field officers to impose deterrent fines if any one tries to fleece consumers during the crisis of lockdown.
Acting on reports of overcharging from consumers, the Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Affairs of Papum Pare District and HQ Office jointly inspected trading premises at Pachin Colony and Papu Village, Naharlagun today. The team consisting of Asstt Controller Papum Pare District Amrit Taba, Debia Tana, Inspector LM, G. Singpho Inspector, Er. Taw Tassar, Inspector, Er. Sangio Talar, TA and police personnel have in their course of inspection registered 15 traders under various provisions of Legal Metrology Act, 2009 for selling cold drink items particularly pepsi, at exorbitant price. They have seized 19 crates of cold drinks for selling above MRP and bakery products for non-declaration of mandatory information.
According to Amrit Taba, ACLM who led the team, most of the traders in these places are reportedly buying cold drinks items from some middlemen whom they presume to be a wholesale dealer. While suggesting them not buy products from any party unless prescribed retail margins are passed onto them, he warned to take stringent action if any party found in the chain that leads to overpricing of cold drink products.
Meanwhile, C. S. Singpho, Asstt. Controller, Lohit District and his team, in a surprise inspection at Second Charali area, Tezu has booked 2 traders for selling packaged items without the mandatory information as required under Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011 and a trader for using non-standard weights and measures that violates provisions of Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
At, Pasighat, Lupha Sikhet Taipodia, Inspector Legal Metrology and her team also booked 4 traders under various provisions of Legal Metrology Act, 2009. One of the trader was registered for involved in packaging and selling of variety of products without obtaining Packer Registration as required, while 2 traders were booked for selling packaged items without the mandatory information as required under P C Rules, 2011. One trader who used non-standard weights and measure was also booked.
