NAHARLAGUN, May 2: Acting on a series of complaints received from the consumers regarding price hike of essential commodities and allied irregularities, a team of Legal Metrology officers of Papum Pare district on Friday conducted surprise inspections at C-Sector, Daily Market, Jullan village and Akashdeep in Capital.
The team comprising Assistant Controller Amrit Taba, Inspector LM, Papum Pare Debia Tana and Inspector LM (Hq) Taw Tasser prompted by a complaint of under-weight of packed rice inspected 2 wholesale dealers near BSNL office and conducted weight test of rice packets of the said brand and found them without manipulation and as such no cases were booked. Thereafter, the team inspected a cold drinks distributor at Jullan village and checked their sales record and wholesale rates. After discussion with the General Manager of the distributor, it was revealed that the distributor was offering a minimum of 6% retail margin on each product. Assistant Controller warned the seller of stern action if cold drinks are found to be sold above MRPs. The team also inspected the daily market at C Sector and Akashdeep where traders were strictly directed to display rates of essential commodities and vegetable items as fixed by the Capital DA in front of their premises for information to customers, failure of which will invite action as per law.
Meanwhile, at Ziro in Lower Subansiri district Legal Metrology officers consisting of Assistant Controller H. H. Atung, Inspector Rakesh Teksing and other enforcement officials inspected the Old Ziro market on Friday and booked two traders for violation of Packaged Commodities Rules 2011. They also warned the traders of the area that stringent action will be taken if overcharging on packaged and essential commodities beyond MRPs and rates fixed by DA are detected.
Keeping in mind the increasing number of complaints regarding overcharging coming through social media during the current lockdown, Controller of Legal Metrology & Consumer Affairs, Naharlagun Hoktum Ori alerted the Legal Metrology Officers (LMOs) of all districts few days back to take appropriate action against the defaulters who intend to take advantage of the crisis.
“Reports of surprise inspections conducted by the LMOs are pouring in from various part of the state,” Ori said, adding that most of the complaints are from the Capital Region. LM & CA PR
