Thousands pay homage to late leader

ITANAGAR, Aug 23: The Asthi Kalash of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee arrived at Itanagar on Thursday evening. Thousands paid tribute to the departed soul comprising of students, technocrats, bureaucrats, political leaders from different parties and the public.
A public viewing was also organized by the state government at Dorjee Khandu Convention Centre where the state’s top brass was present to pay their homage. The condolence ceremony was held with a full guard of honor.
Earlier, Chief Minister Pema Khandu took part in the Atal Asthi Kalash Yatra along with hundreds of well-wishers and attended the condolence meeting in memory of the late BJP leader and former Prime Minister of India. Khandu paid tribute to the departed soul by offering floral tribute and prayed for peace of the departed soul.
Khandu described the former PM as one who had the ability to bring harmony among all parties - ruling and opposition. He said this was visible from the way leaders from both sides of the aisle came together to pay tribute to the great soul.
He also lauded Vajpayee for successfully conducting the Pokhran Nuclear tests in 1998 by evading every surveillance and spy network of the foreign powers.
Khandu credited the former PM with many important schemes and programmes such as the launch of PMGSY, the establishment of DoNER ministry, introducing the BADP programmes, SSA scheme etc.
The Governor of Arunachal Pradesh Brig. (Dr.) B.D. Mishra (Retd.) paid rich tributes to the former Prime Minister.
Remembering late Vajpayee for his path-breaking decisions and initiatives, the Governor said that Atal Ji was one of the most prominent personalities of the century, a great politician, an eminent Statesman, able administrator, development-oriented leader and a memorable poet.
He was a strong advocate of humanism. His demise is an irreparable loss to India, he said.
Remembering the old golden days spent with former Prime Minister Vajpayee, State BJP President Tapir Gao said, “Former PM was an inspiration for all and a disciplined person. Whenever I met him, he used to ask me about Arunachal, though that time we had no BJP government in the state, he used to motivate us to continue to work for the people.”
Representatives from different political parties, National People’s Party (NPP) MLA Mutchu Mithi, Indian National Congress representative Rajen Nani and others also tributes to the memory of late Vajpayee.
Earlier, the Asthi Kalash was received by the BJP leaders at Naharlagun Helipad and thereafter it was brought to the state BJP Headquarters followed by a motorcade. State BJP leaders and hundreds of workers paid tribute to late Vajpayee at the party headquarters.
The Asthi Kalash will be flown to Parsuram Kund situated in Lohit district and will be immersed on Friday.
