Roing, Nov 11: The Joy of Reading Festival, organised by the Lower Dibang Valley District Administration to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi concluded on Saturday last leaving behind warm and rich memories for book lovers of all ages. 
The festival, supported by Gandhi Smriti & Darshan Samiti, GoI and ICDS Department was inaugurated on November 4 by the eminent educationist and ‘Grandmother of KGBVs in India’, Professor Vimala Ramachandran. The week-long festival highlighted the themes ‘Joy of Reading’ and ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ and included lectures and interactions by Professor Ramachandran and eminent Gandhian scholar from Assam, Dr Alaka Sarma along with a range of activities, contests and book exhibitions. On special display was the Gandhi Biography in 5 Arunachalee languages namely Adi, Apatani, Mishmi, Nyshi and Nocte published by Tulika Books.
Speaking at JNV Roing, Professor Ramachandran shared her vast experiences of educational innovations across India and South East Asia and elaborated on the little known GoI document on “Positive Discipline’, which is today adopted by many reputed schools. At KGBV Dambuk, she outlined the origin of KGBV schools in India and mentioned the enormous contribution of the Mahila Shikshan Kendras in 1980s and 90s. Addressing the women activists, SHG members and ICDS personnel, she exhorted them to imbibe reading habits to acquire latest ideas about early childhood education and help in moulding a new generation of learning society in Arunachal, besides appealing the officers of the state administration to proactively contribute to bring social and educational advancement of the rural Arunachalee women. Honorary Director of International Centre of Gandhian Studies, Shillong, Dr Alaka Sarma spoke about the relevance of Gandhij’s teachings in current context. She also held an interaction session with the weavers of Roing town at the District Craft Centre. 
The Joy of Reading Festival brought ample opportunities to the people of Roing, Korunu, Jia, Bolung and Dambuk town to have a feast of books through a 5-day mobile book exhibition supported by Ashok Leyland, Guwahati, along with a permanent exhibition in Roing town. The festival also saw the return of NBT Book Exhibition to Dibang Valley after nearly 2 decades, along with other reputed publishers. The book exhibition was managed by Lohit Youth Library Network with volunteers from Dibang Youth Library, VKV Roing, Intaya Public School and Scouts & Guides of the District Education Department.
