PASIGHAT, Nov 28: To make an overall assessment of the damages caused by Siang floods during the recent monsoon, a joint committee comprising Deputy Chief Engineer, Brahmaputra Board, Chief Engineer of Public Works Department Central Zone B, DC, East Siang along with the Chief Engineers of WRD (P&D) and WRD (WZ) made a spot visit to the flood-hit areas under Mebo Subdivision on Friday.
The team inspected the affected Sigar, Borguli, Seram and Namsing villages where damages had been maximum and a portion of the Mebo-Dhola road was washed out. The damaged flood control chain link boulder bund erected at Sigar village was also inspected. As per official sources, the joint committee report will be submitted to the higher authority to be used further as an input for drawing of effective flood control measures to lessen the annual after-effects of Siang flood on its left bank under Mebo Sub-Division which has been a steady feature since 2000, the year of the Chinese flood.
It is worth mentioning that annual Siang floods have already eroded several hundreds of hectares of agricultural and grazing lands, major public-utility infrastructure like educational institutions, roads, electricity distribution facilities, sericulture farms etc. In fact, the Lower Mebo villages like Borguli, Seram, Kongkul, Namsing, Gadum and Mer along with the Upper Mebo villages of Sigar, Ralling and Motum have remained the worst flood affected areas in Arunachal Pradesh.
There is growing demand for Central government intervention since Siang flows from Chinese-occupied Tibet and chances of China using it as a weapon against India in wars can’t be ruled out.
