ITANAGAR, Apr 26: Alleging election malpractices in 22-Soki/Doni polling station under 24-Daporijo (ST) Assembly Constituency, Janata Dal United (JDU), MLA candidate, Dikto Yekar has demanded the State Election Commission for fresh polling in the said constituency.
Addressing media persons here at the press club, Yekar said five dead persons have exercised their franchise at this particular polling station while 17 voters were deprived from voting during the recently held simultaneous elections on April 11 last.
Giving more input on the matter, the MLA candidate claimed that scrutiny of Form 17- (A) confirmed that a total of 321 voters cast their votes at the polling station from a total electorate of 323 which includes 14 postal ballots.
“How can the number of votes cast reach 321 when 17 voters were deprived from casting their vote and the other five voters are deceased? Such malpractice is absurd and ridiculous,” he said.
Also alleging that the opposition BJP candidate Tanya Soki was inside the polling booth for more than an hour, Yekar claimed that none of the polling and election agents were allowed to cast their vote which “clearly indicates that there was something wrong going on inside the booth.”
The election agent of the JD (U), Talin Lusi Sorum urged the Election Commission to immediately hold an inquiry on the matter comprising of RO, DEO, polling agents and all the official representatives and accordingly order for fresh poll.
“Until the issue is solved, we will fight legally on the matter,” he said adding that “we have all the substantial documents regarding our allegations against the opposition candidate Tanya Soki, which has also been submitted to the ACEO and DEO.”
Meanwhile, JD (U) state convener, Ruhi Tagung condemned the BJP candidate and his fellow workers for the “cheap act”. He appealed the State Election Commission to root out such illegal practice and sought an inquiry on the matter of booth capturing and depriving 17 people from exercising their franchise.
