ITANAGAR, Jan 15: Arunachal Pradesh has become the first state to initiate to prepare the IUCN Red List assessments for all orchids in the state by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Union for Conservation on Nature (IUCN)
The MoU was signed by Manmohan Singh Negi, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) and Head of Forest Forces (HoFF) and Dr. Vivek Saxena, Country Representative, IUCN India in the PCCF office on January 13. This project will spread across 12 months, wherein training workshops for Red List Assessment will be conducted by experts from IUCN Red List Unit and Species Programme Headquarters, Gland, Switzerland. The Department of Environment and Forests will be the nodal department for execution of this project.
The IUCN Red List is a critical indicator of the health of the world's biodiversity. Far more than a list of species and their status, it is a powerful tool to inform and catalyze action for biodiversity conservation and policy change, and critical to protecting the natural resources. Foxtail Orchid being the state flower of Arunachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Pema Khandu is keen on introducing conservation policy to be taken up for endemic species in the state in future.
Arunachal Pradesh is an abode of orchid and has maximum concentration of orchid species which accounts to 40% in the country. ES Newsdesk
