ITANAGAR, Jun 11: Fighting the Covid pandemic in Arunachal wouldn’t have been so comprehensive but for the support of so many individuals and NGOs who continue to work silently.
Atul Kumar Pandey, a 2010 batch IRS officer posted in Kolkata as a Joint  Commissioner of Income Tax has played a stellar role in inspiring many NGOs to help the state at this time of crisis. With the help of Pandey who served as an Election Observer in the 2018 state by-elections, various Kolkata based NGOs have extended financial help to the tune of Rs 5 lakh to various circles of West Siang with Rs. 50,000 each going to Liromoba, Yomcha, Darak, Kamba, Aalo,Likabali, Maryang, Basar, Tirbin including Tirap. Medical officers have received the amounts in their accounts.
Recalling his brief stint in Arunachal, Pandey said it was during the above period as an Election Observer he visited the Darak and Yomcha areas having high Galo population and had the opportunity to closely observe their culture, tradition and lifestyle which fascinated him deeply.
He renewed the bond after 6 months while visiting the Mopin festival and stayed for a week to enjoy the traditional local cuisine and drinks. After returning back to Kolkata, moved by the idea of doing something solid for these people particularly for their educational development, Pandey with the help of a few NGOs started fund sourcing. In the process, he did some work for the schools in Maryang, Gensi and Yomcha and last year Rs 5 lakh was contributed to the Darak School for its development.

Meanwhile, the West Siang District Students Union has hailed the gesture of the IRS officer and said the donation will help the people during this difficult pandemic.
