ITANAGAR, Jun 26: The 33rd International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed today all across the state along with rest of the country and world with the intention of sensitizing people about the ill effects of drugs and with a clarion call to remain distant from addiction.
In Pasighat, braving heavy downpour hundreds of students joined mass processions taken out by the schools in East Siang district to spread a message to the people to refrain from drug addiction. As a part of the day-long programme a seminar was organized at IGJ Higher Secondary School auditorium on this year’s theme “Health for Justice, Justice for Health” by the Narcotic Control Cell (Department of Tax & Excise), District Administration and Health & Family Welfare department. It was attended by Deputy Commissioner Dr. Kinny Singh, SP Prashant Gautam, State Nodal Officer, Narcotics, Oli Koyu, DMO Dr. Kaling Dai, officers, WASE executive members, teachers and students. A pledge was also administered by the DD (ICDS) PE Angu on the occasion.
DC Singh opined that since adolescence is a highly vulnerable period care should be taken to help boys and girls in this age group to prevent them from taking drugs. She also appreciated the tireless efforts of WASE, ABK (WW) and police department in making East Siang a drugs-free district. SP through PPT explained how police could shape a healthy society. Resource person Oli Koyu who is also the State Nodal Officer (T&E Dept.) dwelt at length about the significance of the day and appealed the student community not to be the victims of this wrong culture adding that only moral education could save them from the killer trap of drug abuse. Koyu also informed that during the week-long observation, various activities would be taken up to motivate the students to lead a healthy, drugs-free and progressive career. WASE General Secretary Joya T Moyong said that unemployed youths often resort to narcotics in the hope of forgetting their troubles, which is undesirable. Advocate Borik Tarang threw light on the legal consequences and preventive measures.
G/186 CRPF company based in Pasighat organized an awareness programme on drug abuse at SFS School, Pasighat today to observe the day. Speaking on the occasion, Inspector Bhupendra Singh, G/186 CRPF Pasighat advised the young school children of SFS School, Diking, Pasighat to shun any kind of drug addictions and advised them to help their friends getting attracted toward drug addictions by informing the same to the school authorities or the parents of the student concerned.
As a resource person, SMO MD (Gen. Med), Bakin Pertin General Hospital Pasighat Dr. Ogin Jerang also made the students aware about the ill effects of drugs. Principal of SFS School, Fr. Jojan Joseph advised the students to re-affirm themselves to stay away from drug and its menace and expressed his school’s thankfulness to CRFP and the doctor concerned.
In Yupia, International Day Against Drug Abuse And Illicit Trafficking was observed in Nyorch market with huge enthusiasm and participation with the aim of creating awareness about the ill effects of drug intoxication and also reminding the role of parents and elders in tackling the menace. Composition of drugs in medicine was also explained about how too much of intake of chemicals might lead to addiction.
Stressing on the need of de-addiction programmes it was shared that TRIMS, Naharlagun offers counselling and free medication in this regard. ADC I/c DC Yupia, DRCHO, DANO cum MS DAMS and DPO (NCD) cum DSO (IDSP) from Yupia attended the programme.
West Siang Police observed the day by conducting a speech competition among the students of Secondary & Higher Secondary levels involving parents, Mothers’ Vision, APWWS Aalo, ATPWDS, Galo Ane, teachers and students at Gumin Kiin today.
Highlighting the objective behind celebrating the day, West Siang SP Jummar Basar said that drug menace is one of the major problems society is facing today as it not only derails the youths but also shatters the very fabric of society. DMO Aalo, Dr. Moli Riba stressed on proper study of the behavioural attitude of children by the parents to control them at the initial stage.
President ATWDS Ex. Minister Kento Ete, DDSE Aalo Eto Ete, President APWWS Aalo Unit Marbom Riba Bagra, Inspector O. Pertin and Tashi Yangi spoke at length on drug menace and its impact on society and stressed that such awareness programmes are necessary to save youths from drugs. Chairman Mothers’ Vision Jumde Yomgam Gamlin and Kennedy Bagra, who is giving counselling to drug addicts at Drug Rehabilitation Centre Aalo highlighted in detail on the problems of drugs, its trafficking and ways and means to check it. Deputy SP Sangey Thinley expressed his gratitude for mass participation in making the event a successful one. Prizes were given to all winners on the occasion.
In Tirap, Department of Health & Family Welfare and Care Me Home Society, Khonsa observed the day with a mini marathon from Khonsa Bazar Taxi stand to KV school and back covering 4 kms for both male & female categories with the slogan “ No To Drugs-Yes To Life” in which cash prizes were sponsored by Care Me Home Welfare Society.
DC Tirap P.N. Thungon while flagging the run appealed the youths of Tirap district to shun drug abuse and illicit trafficking added that the districts of TCL “Tirap Changlang and Longding” are badly affected with Kaani Poppy cultivation and most of the youths are addicted with brown sugar and Kaani. DC further appreciated the health department and Care Me Home Welfare Society for conducting the mini marathon in a grand manner.
In Female Category, 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions were clinched by Kamcha Kamhua, Chajo Tesia and Phithian Affi respectively. In Male Category the first three spots went to Wakhian Tekwa, Wanglo Losu and Wangse Hakhun respectively. Rs 5000, Rs 3000 & Rs 1500 were the cash prize amounts for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd spots. The programme was attended by all Medical Officers from General Hospital Khonsa, members from Care Me Home Welfare Society, public and students from different places of the district. DIPRO inputs
