ITANAGAR, Sep 29: United Arunachal Indigenous People’s Forum (UAIPF) will resort to democratic movement against Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) by launching mass protests on October 3 next under the banner of North East Forum for Indigenous People (NEFIP), informed UAIPF President Laffe Paffa.
Addressing a press conference here at Press Club today, Paffa said that despite objections from various Northeast states against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill, central government has once again decided to place it in the coming parliamentary session. When asked about the objections from various governments on CAB, UAIPF President said that they cannot trust this government as abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu & Kashmir is the best example. “If they can abolish Article 370 without consent of its native people, then how can we trust them,” he asserted.
North East Forum for Indigenous People (NEFIP) is the amalgamation of various indigenous people from all the Northeast states to fight against various issues related to their rights and is spearheading the movement against CAB. Along with Arunachal, dharna or symbolic protest will be organised in all the states of the region under the banner of NEFIP on October 3 next to counter CAB. Further, we also appeal all the like-minded people, students, CBOs and indigenous people to join our fight against CAB, he urged.
It can be recalled that Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the recently held fourth North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) conclave said that CAB will neither affect the special provisions enjoyed by NE states under Article 371, nor it will be in conflict with the existing laws pertaining to safeguarding of the identities, culture and customs of the indigenous people of the region. The same day, he also had a meeting with the eight chief ministers of the NE states to allay their fears on CAB.
