ITANAGAR, Oct 26: Businesses in the state capital observed a total shutdown for the second consecutive day today in solidarity with commercial building owners protesting against the eviction drive being carried out by district administration along the Right of Way (RoW) from Chandranagar to Papu Nallah.
Most major markets of the Capital complex, including the otherwise bustling Akashdeep and Ganga wore a deserted look. The shutdown was near-total with wholesale and retail shops in sectors and medical stores too responding to the call given by Itanagar Market Welfare Association (IMWA).
The drive is being carried out by the district administration to clear the structures along RoW for four laning of NH-415 following an order issued recently.
When contacted IMWA, President, Yumlam Achung termed the shutter down stir a "total success", however informed that markets will open from Saturday following the losses incurred by business houses. Clarifying that the IMWA welcomes the eviction order as it is for a public purpose, Achung moreover lamented that the state government must provide compensation to affected landowners for the structures erected with hard earned money.
He said that it is unfair to evict building owners who settled there for decades with proper land deed and constructed the infrastructures before the road was part of the National Highway without providing any compensation.
Achung observed that many people who are directly and indirectly benefitting from the establishments would be affected if no compensation is paid to them and thus rob them of their livelihood.
"The government must convene a meeting, hear the grievances of affected people and provide compensation as per law, he further appealed. The IMWA pegged the losses be to around lakhs of rupees because of the bandh.
Meanwhile, the eviction drive which entered the third day was peaceful with no any untoward incident reported. And over 20 structures were partially or completely removed during the three-day drive.
