ITANAGAR, Nov 20: The Indian Medical Association-Arunachal Pradesh Unit (IMA-AP) has announced it will organize a plasma donation drive from November 23-28 at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) to meet plasma shortage.
Speaking to the media persons today here at the Press Club, President IMA-AP Dr. Lobsang Tsetim appealed to the Covid-19 survivors to voluntarily donate plasma as a humanitarian gesture and help the state in battling against the virus. “Be a COVID warrior and donate plasma to save lives,” the IMA-AP President  said, adding that plasma donation improves recovery rate and reduces mortality. Reportedly, out of 14800, only 8 cured patients in the state have come forward and donated their plasma so far, while the others are still afraid of getting re-infected, Dr. Tsetim informed.
Meanwhile, IMA-AP unit General Secretary Dr Jego Ori informed that one plasma unit can save two lives and a recovered patient can donate once in every 15 days up to two months after discharge. “The therapy includes extracting plasma from the recovered person’s blood after 28 days of his or her recovery date and infusing it into a critical Covid-19 patient as it contains a specific neutralizing antibody that removes pathogens and possibly stops the virus from combining with the cell surface receptor effecting further halt of the virus’s progression,” he explained. Dr Ori also added that individuals, both symptomatic and asymptomatic who have completed two months or minimum 28 days from their recovery date and are in the age group of 18- 60 years, mostly males and females who have not yet conceived are eligible to be donors.

“The Chief Minister has promised to provide recognition to the donors through awards,”, IMA-AP President informed. While making the appeal, he informed that registration for the drive has already started and interested individuals can enroll their names through 9402782869, 7628977650 and 9436069257.
