LONGDING, Dec 21: A massive wildfire broke out in the jungles of Wakka village on Tuesday evening due to firing of illumination round by security forces while chasing insurgents.
The fire incident occured on December 20 at about 7.30 in the evening, when the 6 Assam Rifles, stationed at Wakka were chasing underground militants of the NSCN (KYA) and fired illumination in the process. Within a few minutes fire spread all around and was uncontrollable and engulfed the village.
Risking their lives, hundreds of villagers swung into action and doused the wildfire after a rigorous three hour extinguishing operation. During the operation few villagers received minor injuries and 39 houses were partially damaged. No loss of human and animal lives has been reported. Four fire fighters along with two fire truck from Longding headquarters were also pressed into action.
