PASIGHAT, Sep 24: The patrolling team of Borguli Wildlife Range under D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary here intercepted a group of villagers engaged in illegal fishing in Siang river around the sanctuary on Tuesday evening.
The intercepted villagers were reportedly from Seram village under Mebo Sub-Division and the seized items were handed over to the GB of the said village. As per departmental sources, three groups of people in as many country boats were fishing around the sanctuary waters using electrocution method (using inverter and battery) which has been banned by the administration. While one party was let off with a warning, among the other two, one managed to flee and the other was intercepted leading to seizure of their instruments.
The Range Officer of Borguli Wildlife Range handed over the seized items to the GB of Seram village for action as per village rule instead of taking legal action from the department’s side. However, it came to light that one of the persons involved in illegal fishing had threatened a staff of dire consequences. “One of the persons called me at night on Tuesday itself and warned me of dire consequences for seizing their inverter and battery,” said Apuram Sisam, one of the dedicated staff of DEWS who was instrumental in arrest of a departmental staff who connived with hunters poaching in the sanctuary. Although an undertaking was taken from the person not to repeat the illegalities and beg apology, Sisam is fearing personal vengeance.
Dedicated staff like Sisam and others have appealed to the Divisional Forest Officer, DEWS and the PCCF Wildlife-cum-Chief Wildlife Warden not to show soft approach to the wrongdoers. They have also alleged that reluctance of a section of seniors in standing by the committed staff is causing moral discouragement.
