New Delhi, Nov 2: Observing the ‘International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists’ on Monday, the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) along with its affiliates while denouncing the rising crimes against journalists has demanded from both the Central and State governments to put an immediate end to the ‘culture of impunity’.
In a statement issued on Monday, the IJU President and former member of Press Council of India Geetartha Pathak and Secretary General and Vice President, International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Sabina Inderjit lamented that in the world’s largest democracy that champions the freedom of press, attacks, harassment, intimidation of journalists and unprecedented attempts to suppress truth by the powers-that-be are rising like never before. “The IJU has been vociferous in its criticism of gagging of the media and demands from the Modi government that it must respect the freedom of the press and allow the fourth estate to function independently,” the release mentioned.
As per the IFJ, despite being the world’s largest democracy, India has a grim record of killings of 55 journalists between 2010 and 2020 and out of this long list, only one case has been solved. It added that in spite of 68 media rights violations including arrests, killings, attacks, censorship, harassment, misuse of law particularly the law of sedition and economic pressure in the country from January to October, 2020, justice has been delivered in very few cases due to poor police investigation or indifference of authorities.
