Hyderabad/Chandigarh, Sep 8: The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) has strongly condemned the arrest of the Leh-based senior journalist and General Secretary of Ladakh Journalists’ Union Tsewang Rigzin on 5 September last.
Rigzin was arrested due to a critical post made by an unidentified person against the Ladakh Lok Sabha MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal on the Facebook Group ‘Ladakh in Media’ which is administered by him.
He was subsequently given bail. IJU President K Sreenivas Reddy, Secretary-General and member of Press Council of India (PCI) Jammu, Balwinder Singh in a statement termed Rigzin’s arrest as “illegal, arbitrary and blatant attack on the freedom of expression.” The statement recalled the Delhi High ruling of 2016 where it was made clear that an Administrator of a social media group could not be held responsible for a post by one of its members.
“The local MP and his party were angry with him for his reportage and social media posts that raised issues impacting people,” IJU said, demanding an unconditional withdrawal of the case against Rigzin. It also urged the Press Council of India Chairman, Justice C K Prasad to initiate action to protect the freedom of press and freedom of expression which are under stress in recent times. IJU PR
