ITANAGAR, Mar 7: On eve of the ensuing International Women’s Day, the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) has resolved to reiterate its demand for full maternity leave and benefits as per the guidelines set by Court, applicable to all working women journalists across the states.
IJU reiterated its demand through one of its resolutions taken during the two-day IJU National Executive Meeting (NEC) held at Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh on March 4 and 5 which was attended by Journalist Unions from 13 states. The Union has also demanded the media managements across the nation to avoid night shifts for working women journalists and if possible, facilitate transportation services for them. Among other resolutions taken by IJU during the meeting included demand to the union government to keep the Working Journalists Act out of the Labour Code, implementation of Wage Board awards in newspaper houses, bringing electronic and digital media under purview of the Working Journalists Act by amendment and compensation to those journalists who have incurred harm and damage of properties while covering the recent communal riots in Delhi.
Meanwhile, IJU during its NEC meeting also made various unanimous appointments which included appointing the Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) President Amar Sangno as its National Secretary. “It is very encouraging for the state’s press fraternity that IJU has acknowledged the hard work and contributions of the Arunachal press fraternity towards upholding the values and ethics of journalism. The state’s press fraternity welcomes IJU’s decision to appoint APUWJ President as its National Secretary and congratulates Sangno on his appointment. At the same time, it is hoped the new National Secretary will continue his endeavour of making freedom of expression a guaranteed right both in paper and in practice,” APC Secretary General Tanom Jerang said.
