BANGKOK, Nov 3: The International Federation of Journalists Asia Pacific expressed concern over the growing digital media challenges in the region in its ongoing Digital Working Group workshop in Bangkok. The three day workshop is entirely focusing on media situation of the Asia Pacific region pertaining to digital challenges and strengthening of union activities.
The inaugural session of workshop that started on Friday was delved at length on media issues and Regional Corporation of Southeast Asia Journalists Union (SEAJU). Briefing presentation on organizing in Digital Ecosystem, IFJ Asia Pacific Director, Jane Worthington remarked that mass redundancy in media organisations is one of the greatest challenges in the digital media organizations across the region and globe. The members from different countries observed International Day to end Impunity for Crimes against Journalists on the sideline of the workshop on Friday.
“Working condition is primary threat for journalists and job security is challenging,” Asia Pacific Acting Director added. Jane further sought technical solution to the challenges while sharing ideas and information to help IFJ inform to strengthen and equip to tackle digital relation situation in the region. She further articulates “Technology platforms have become publishers in a short space of time.
Newsrooms reach larger audiences than ever before through new platforms but at the cost of identity, branding and necessary audience data. Social platforms are driving change and shaping journalism in new ways.” The representatives from Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Timor Leste attended the brainstorming workshop.
Representing Indian Journalists Union (IJU) in the workshop Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists(APUWJ) President Amar Sangno highlighted the media situation of India in particular the digital media and the government’s repressive policies against media to curb freedom press.
Justin Molito, Writers Guild of America East USA who attended as source person presented power point presentation on how union change or adapt approaches to building labour power into the future.
