ITANAGAR, May 10: On the first day of the week-long lockdown that commenced from Monday, the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) witnessed a complete shutdown of all business establishments with no movement of denizens and vehicles on the streets.
Only a few government institutions and hospitals, pharmacies and Covid Vaccination Centres being exempted from the lockdown were allowed to remain open on the day. Speaking to reporters, Superintendent of Police, ICR Jimmy Chiram informed that four companies of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been deployed along with more than 250 police personnel of Arunachal Pradesh Police (APP) to ensure security during the week-long lockdown. There is also a strict vigilance at the three entry points in Hollongi, Banderdewa and Gumto and 29 police nakas in Itanagar, Naharlagun, Banderdewa and Nirjuli have also been activated, the SP informed. Appealing the denizens to follow the lockdown order issued by the District Administration, Chiram appealed them to stay indoors and move out only if exempted and carry authentic identity cards. “There are some exemptions like people visiting hospitals for vaccines, departments engaged in emergency services, sanitary workers etc. However, for all such movements valid identity cards issued by the respective institutions must be carried,” he added. Elaborating on administrative preparations to enforce the lockdown, the SP said that adequate police personnel including those from the Women Police Station (WPS) at various checkpoints have been deployed to ensure zero movement of people. Earlier on the day, Chiram visited various checkpoints to have an on-ground assessment of the lockdown’s implementation.

“We have been imposing fines before the lockdown against violators for not wearing masks and spitting in public places. But the good thing is that now our people are getting serious and obeying the rules. Most of the time I have noticed that denizens are wearing masks,” SDPO-Itanagar K Sikom stated.
