KHARSANG, Jul 2: Hundreds joined the protest cum dharna in front of the office of the GeoEnpro Petroleum Limited demanding immediate reinstatement and rollback of termination letters served to 19 of its employees.
Holding placards and banners, members of Kharsang Circle Unemployed Youth Association (KCUYA) Tangsa Youth Association (TYA), All Changlang District Students Union (ACDSU), All Tangsa Students Union (ATSU), senior citizens and the public participated in the dharna.
President KCUYA Munpong Khimhum stated ‘When Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already advised all the governments and private sectors to support its employees and not to terminate anyone during this lockdown period the GeoEnpro Petroleum Limited an oil extraction company based at Kharsang has terminated 19 employees both contractual and regular,' he added.
While condemning such move by the company, Khimhum demanded immediate rollback of termination letters and their reinstatement. Most of the employees are from poor background and are lone bread earners, so they will be helpless during this pandemic if they lose their jobs, he said while pledging to continue the protest till the company reinstates the employees.
When contacted, Local MLA and Minister, UD, Food & Civil Supply, Kamlung Mossang informed that he has spoken to the Chief Executive Officer of the company and advised not to terminate any of the employees.  ‘As per the  CEO, the termination letter was served due to the increase of 40% CSS in crude oil and other taxes from the Centre. So to reduce the expenses they have terminated few of its employees,' added the minister.
‘I have suggested to the company to reduce its other expenses instead of terminating employees who are from poor background and lone bread earners of the family. The profit margin of the company may see a slight decline for some months but it shouldn’t compromise with existing employees especially during this pandemic,'  Mossang added.
As per report, many local firms adjusted with the company have also agreed to reduce profit margins from the existing 16% to 12% so that the company and its employees wouldn’t suffer, stated Mossang.
