ZIRO, Oct 28: Hundreds today joined the final journey of veteran journalist Taro Chatung to bid him a tearful adieu as his mortal remains was laid to rest with full traditional honour here at his ancestral home in Keilya Village, Ziro in Lower Subansiri district.
Chatung, who was diagnosed with cancer breathed his last on October 26 at TRIHMS. He was 56 and is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter. After relinquishing a lucrative state civil service job in 1988, he started his journalism and film-making career and was subsequently conferred with a state gold medal. He was a renowned figure for his philanthropic work and contribution to the field of journalism and his special programme ‘News & Views’ on Doordarshan became a huge hit and one of the most watched TV show in the state.
Being the founding member of Arunachal Press Club (APC) and Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ), he served both the organisations as Presidents. Besides APC & APUWJ, he also founded the Arunachal Electronic Media Association (AEMA) that paved the way for growth of electronic media in the state.
The untimely death of the legendary journalist has cast a pall of gloom across the state with hundreds of people taking to social media platforms to express their condolences.
Meanwhile, All Taro Taku Welfare Fund (ATTWF), Ziro has extended their heartfelt gratitude to all well-wishers who supported in every way throughout the days since the veteran journalist took ill.
ATTWF has thanked local MLA and Minister Agri-Horti, Er.Tage Taki for his support along with Ex-Minister Padi Richo, Ex-MLA Nani Ribia and President, Helping Hand Society Robin Hibu, IPS for morally supporting and paying visit to the ailing journalist while he was undergoing treatment. The organisation has also expressed gratefulness to Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein for paying visit to TRIHMS during the critical moments of treatment. Executive and Advisory Board Members of Arunachal Press Club have been conveyed heartfelt indebtedness for coming all the way from the state capital to join the last rites.
TSD, PSS, AYA, AWAZ ASU, representatives of various NGOs and all well-wishers have also been thanked on behalf of the Taro Taku denizens and people of Hija village for attending the last rites of Chatung which was performed as per Apatani traditions.
