NIRJULI, Dec 5: Hundreds of people this evening participated in a candlelight protest rally in Nirjuli seeking justice for late Licha Tania.
The deceased, a Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) student, was killed on the night of November 30 last after a Xylo car rammed into his scooter near Nirjuli village-1. He was declared 'brought dead' at TRIHMS after the police patrolling car rushed him there. The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident, identified as Pacha Dara, who was arrested by the patrolling team immediately was found to be ‘drunk’ according to the medical report. Starting at Huto English School, the protesters marched all the way to the residence of the deceased shouting slogans ‘we want justice’, ‘justice for Licha Tania’, ‘do not drink and drive’ and ‘to not grant bail to the culprit’.
Elder brother of the deceased, Licha Saha informed that the rally apart from seeking justice for the deceased also seeks to create awareness about drunk driving.
“Youths these days are involved in reckless drunk driving, which took away our brother. Please do not drink and drive,” he appealed.
“Our brother was a student of RGU and we had high hopes for him. But all our dreams have now shattered, all because of drunk driving,” he said.
Saying that his family has high hopes with the law enforcing agency that justice would be delivered to them, the brother demanded that the culprit should be awarded with exemplary capital punishment. “Today this has happened to our family, tomorrow it may be yours,” he further added.
Speaking to this daily, OC PS Nirjuli M Geyi informed that the accused is currently under judicial custody at Jullang jail.
