ITANAGAR, Oct 13: An awareness  campaign on ‘Drug Abuse & HIV/AIDS’ being organized  by the Galo Youth Organization (GYO) was flagged off today here from the office of Galo Welfare Society (GWS) by Capital Complex SP Tumme Amo.
GYO is organising the drive in collaboration with Arunachal Pradesh State Aids Control Society (APSACS) and Drug De-addiction Cell, Department of Health Service. Speaking on the occasion, SP appreciated the organisation’s  members for initiating the awareness campaign against drug abuse and HIV/AIDS.  “Drug abuse is one of the major challenges in society now and everyone has noticed how Capital Police is fighting against the menace in twin capitals and had arrested many peddlers including relatives of many legislators even,” Amo said. He further appealed all other organizations to conduct similar awareness campaigns against drug menace. Elaborating on the campaign, GYO President, Bajum Tali said that it will be held phase-wise in all the Galo inhabited districts and the first phase will be held from October 14 at Donyi Polo Government College Kamki, Government Model College Basar and in Nari-Koyu. The second phase will be held from October 16 next at Likabali, Baririjo, Liromoba, Yomcha and Dumporijo, he added. “Our motive is to create awareness amongst the youths and even if 10 per cent of them get motivated and come back to the mainstream through our campaign we would feel that our effort has at least done something for society,” Tali said.
While seeking support from all, GYO President stated that this is only a beginning toward a drug-free society and there is still a long way to go.
