ITANAGAR, Sep 28: A Galo Youth Organisation (GYO) team headed by its President Bajom Tali visited the Ego Camp flood-affected areas on Monday to deliver relief materials to the marooned families braving road blockades on the way.
Eight rice bags, 13 solar lamps, street solar lights, mosquito nets and 25 carpets were distributed to affected families. The GYO team was accompanied by two leading digital news channels for wide coverage.
After reviewing the damages caused by flash floods, the visiting team observed that the incident was not caused by nature but was a result of rampant and uncontrolled cutting of mountain edges on the sides of the road which consequently caused erosion.
It can be recalled that two people lost their lives after getting caught in flash floods triggered by heavy rain and many dwelling houses were also completely damaged at the Ego Camp on the midnight of September 17. Expressing concern over the slow pace of work, the visiting members observed that the construction companies are not serious in completing the project as only 25 per cent of works has been completed so far.
GYO has appealed to the state government to immediately release ex-gratia to the affected victims and sought Central funds for restoration of the Bailey bridge over Ego river which has been completely washed away.
GYO president Bajom Tali meanwhile extended gratitude to union minister Kiren Rijiju who assured construction of temporary structure over the Ego river within ten days time to restore surface communication to Leparada and other districts.
"Since winter season is approaching, I would like to request the union minister to initiate steps for early construction of a permanent bridge over the Ego river given its strategic location," he said.
