NIRJULI, Feb 5: Disgusted with prolonged government apathy, the disgruntled residents of Rainbow Colony, Likhi have started constructing a flood protection wall voluntarily through raising of donations.
“We are irked with regular floods in Barapani river especially in summer that flows through our colony causing huge damages and to save ourselves we have taken the stupendous task of constructing the embankment by contributing money ourselves,” informed the Adviser, Rainbow Colony Welfare Society (RCWS) Lokam Mangha. We have started constructing the 300-meter embankment having a breath of 4 metres and a height of 5 metres to stop repetition of last years’ misfortune when we lost our land and properties due to soil erosion caused by flash floods, added Mangha, also disclosing that not only private residential areas, but government institutions as well like NERIST, BPL Building, VKV School are on verge of danger. Mangha further informed that on many occasions RCWS submitted representations to the concerned authority seeking assistance to construct an embankment but no help has arrived yet. Since last five years, flood has engulfed at least 40 to 50 metres of land including properties and if no immediate precautions are taken, in next two to three years the entire colony will be submerged or washed away, Chairperson, RCWS Dr RD Khirme explained.
Authority is yet to pay heed on our request but since we can’t wait, the society has started constructing the wall by collecting Rs 1-2 lakh from at least 52 families residing in the area, Chairperson added. “We can’t afford all the expenditure and hence urge the government to grant some fund to complete the project,” Dr Khirme appealed.
