ITANAGAR, Jan 22: Governor Brig. (Dr.) B. D. Mishra (Retd.) accompanied by the state’s First Lady Neelam Misra today visited Mawlynnong village in Meghalaya which received the title of “Cleanest Village in Asia” in 2003 from Discover India.
The Governor who is on an official tour to Meghalaya for attending the 69th Plenary of the North Eastern Council visited the village and interacted with the officials and felicitated the villagers for being the proud residents of Asia’s cleanest village. Impressed by 100% literacy rate of the villagers and the highly progressive role of its women folk to showcase the village as an acme of neatness, he said this has contributed in their socio-economic upliftment. The ‘cleanest village’ tag has led to flourish of tourism with many houses earning well from homestay arrangements and sale of local handicrafts have also increased.
This is the benefit of individual and collective efforts in keeping the area clean and hygienic, the Governor who has been the champion of Swachh Bharat Mission in Arunachal Pradesh opined.
