Indian Army conducts ‘Know Your Army’ outreach
ITANAGAR, Dec 15: Joining the rest of the state and country in commemorating Vijay Diwas, the historic day of December 16, 1971 when the Indian Armed Forces overwhelmed the Pakistani Army that led to the birth of Bangladesh, Governor Brig. (Dr.) B. D. Mishra (Retd.) today paid tribute to the Indian soldiers who while displaying valour sacrificed their lives.
A participant in the 13-day war himself, the Governor recalled the action-filled moments prior to the day of victory when Pakistan bombarded 11 Indian air fields on December 3, 1971 and the circumstances that compelled India to respond. In his message he recounted how Pakistan unleashed unprecedented tyranny and genocide on the local population of erstwhile East Pakistan, leading to mass exodus of millions of Bengali-speaking people into India that posed great socio-economic strain and threat to Indian security. Recalling the day when under the leadership of Field Marshal Manekshaw the Indian armed forces defeated their Pakistani counterparts forcing them to surrender en bloc, the Governor termed it as an unprecedented instance of forced surrender of such a large number of troops on a single day in world military history.
“On this glorious day, I join the people of Arunachal Pradesh and the nation in paying rich tribute to the Indian soldiers, who made supreme sacrifice in the 1971 Indo-Pak war in fulfilling the mission of the nation and defeating the enemy in their own land,” Governor’s message read. PRO Raj Bhavan
