SHERGAON, Mar 28: For Team GarungThuk, being acknowledged for their movement has been nothing less than a dream come true. Started with the theme ‘If a child cannot reach to education, education must reach to the child’, the GarungThuk community library of Shergaon in West Kameng has received an award at the India Reading Olympiad in the Innovative Library format organized by “Food4thought foundation” at Hyderabad Literary Festival 2020.
‘GarungThuk' literally translates to 'Our Village' and it's an NGO created by the like-minded youths and intellectuals of Shergaon which pursues an objective of serving its people in all-possible means, right from education to health, art and culture, ecotourism and biodiversity conservation. Established in 2014 with at least 25 members, GarungThuk is scripting social changes in every field of Shergaon. On October 4, 2014 its office was inaugurated by the eldest women of the village, informed Rinchin Khandu Lama, a member of the NGO. Observing the importance of education, Team GarungThuk came up with the idea of setting up a community library with a serene ambience where students can read books without any disturbance, Rinchin informed. “To give shape to the idea of starting the community library, the team started crowd-funding and collecting books. Renowned NGO, Pratham Books also contributed to the library,” he said. Narrating more about the library, Rinchin said it was inaugurated by a nursery student on October 14, 2015. The concept behind the inauguration by a nursery student was to make them realise that the library is their own property and books are of vital importance in their life, he added. Giving the details of additional activities of the NGO, the member shared that it also distributes books to various nearby schools as an implementation of the motto it pursues. From nursery rhymes to short stories, fiction and philosophical, books cutting across multiple genres are available in the library and besides the facility of reading books, the students are also provided with opportunities to witness inspirational and motivational documentaries and short videos from time to time, Rinchin said while giving the details. “The library is very helpful and in every available free time we visit it to read books,” Sangge Jangmu, a class VII student from Government Middle School, Thukman-Shergaon said.

It’s worth mentioning that besides working in the education sector, GarungThuk works for conservation of biodiversity, organises free medical camps in villages and promotes ecotourism. It is also engaged in preserving the traditions and culture of the Shergaon area.
Those interested in donating books to GarungThuk can do so by contacting through its Facebook account.
