ITANAGAR, Oct 16 (PTI): Former Arunachal Pradesh Minister Tsering Tashi has died at his residence here after battling with cancer, family sources said on Friday.
He was 69.
Tashi who died on Thursday night is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa, who is his brother said.
Born in Khrimu village in Tawang district, Tashi had attended the Sainik School, Bhubaneshwar in Odisha and graduated from Jawaharlal Nehru College, Pasighat.
Tashi joined active politics in 1978 and won the mid- term polls in 1980.
He was inducted into the government as one of the five cabinet ministers immediately after his first election victory by then chief minister Gegong Apang.
During his first term in office, he held the portfolios of PWD and Cooperative, among others.
In his second term in office, he held the portfolios of Social-Culture, Finance, RWD and Law.
Tashi was instrumental in getting Tawang the district status in 1984 and in the formation of the Itanagar Buddhist Culture Society.
His body will be kept at his residence, Tenzin Villa, in Siddarth Vihar, for his former colleagues, friends and well-wishers to pay their last respects to the departed soul, after 2 pm, Jampa added.

Governor, CM, Speaker condole former minister’s demise

ITANAGAR, Oct 16: Governor Brig. (Dr.) B. D. Mishra (Retd.), Chief Minister Pema Khandu and State Legislative Assembly Speaker Pasang D. Sona have condoled the demise of former Minister Tsering Tashi who breathed his last on Thursday after a prolonged illness.
In his condolence letter to Sange Lhamu, the wife of Late Tashi, Governor remembered the former minister as a man of varied interests who made lasting contributions in promotion of literary works, social activities and indigenous culture and traditions. In his demise the state has lost a distinguished leader who left a lasting imprint in different areas of public life, the letter mentioned. “I join the people of Arunachal Pradesh to pray to the Almighty for eternal peace of the departed soul and fortitude to the members of the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss,” Governor’s message read.
The Chief Minister in his condolence wrote: “The news of the sad demise of Tsering Tashi came as a shocker to me. He was a living legend and inspiration to many. At this moment of grief, me, my family, colleagues in the government and the state’s people extend solidarity with the bereaved family members and pray to Lord Buddha to bestow them with strength to bear the irreparable loss,” CM’s message read.
In his condolence message, the Speaker said that late Tsering Tashi was an experienced and committed leader who made important contributions towards development of the state.  “In the demise of Tsering Tashi, the state has lost a prominent leader and a great Arunachalee,” Sona stated, while praying to Lord Buddha for eternal peace of the departed soul.
