PASIGHAT, Dec 12: Launching a crackdown on illegal timber business prevalent in the Seram Forest-Borguli Wildlife Range region, the staff of the D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary along with their Mebo Forest Range (Territorial) counterparts today intercepted and damaged two rafts carrying illegal logs while being transported via Siang river.
As per information from the Borguli Wildlife Range staff, a total of 109 logs were seized. “As soon as we noticed the illegal timber logs being transported, we informed Range Forest Officer, Mebo RF Oson Tayeng and Range Forest Officer, Borguli Wildlife Range Naning Perme. Acting on their directions we cut and damaged the rafts, but the boat which was pulling them managed to flee,” the staff narrated the operation. Meanwhile, the staff also informed they are getting threat calls from the illegal timber smugglers. “They are saying they had ‘understanding’ with the concerned officials which means involvement of bribe,” one of the wildlife staff informed.
When contacted, the Borguli Wildlife Range RFO said the smuggled logs were being ferried via Siang. “We will not tolerate any illegalities in the area,” he informed. When asked for details, the Mebo RF RFO informed the seized logs had been damaged by the staff on his direction. “I have directed Seram Beat staff to take drastic action against the timber smugglers,” he added.
