ZIRO, Mar 4: In an attempt to check illegal hunting of migratory birds in and around Ziro valley, an intensive search operation was launched here on the paddy fields early this morning by a combined patrolling team consisting of members from the Dutta Pyapung Conservation Club (DPCC), Ngunu Ziro and Hapoli Forest Division.
The search operation led to the interception of a suspected hunter with a SBBL gun and recovery of two live bullets. Divisional Forest Officer, Hapoli For est Division Abhinav Kumar who led the operation from the department’s side applauded the initiative taken by DPCC and Ngunu Ziro and appealed to other local NGOs to come forward to volunteer with the Forest Department in curbing the menace. It’s worthy to mention that Forest Department, Ziro has been conducting raids in local markets as a measure to contain the sale of wildlife meat in coordination with the local NGOs. The Department also plans to conduct regular raids around the WRC fields and water bodies like Siikhe Lake.
The high altitude Ziro valley is a preferred refuge for the migratory birds from Tibet and Siberia. Recently, a Mandarin duck was spotted in the area which was the first to be recorded in Arunachal Pradesh. The practice of wet rice cultivation in the valley also provides a good feeding ground for these migratory birds during winters.
Unfortunately, these birds have become a prime target of local hunters who hunt them for consumption. DIPRO
