ITANAGAR/MOIN, Dec 5:  Along with rest of the country and world, Directorate of Soil and Water Conservation (S&WC), RWD observed World Soil Day with the theme ‘Keep Soil Alive: Protect Soil Biodiversity’ here at Moin village today.
Highlighting the history of World Soil Day, Director, S & WC Joram Puppa briefed the gathering about the importance of soil conservation, citing examples of civilisations coming to an abrupt end due to unsustainable development of soil. While advocating for intensive integrated farming, Joram stated that if the villagers extend support to conserve soil and its health, the Department may consider bringing in the IIF projects. “Poor soil makes farmers poor and poor farmers make the country poor. We have to take a pledge today to protect the biodiversity of soil and keep it alive,” he opined.
Detailing the ill effects of soil contamination, Joint Director, S&WC RN Singh informed that every day at least 50 different species of flora and fauna are lost due to soil contamination. “Arunachal Pradesh has both fertile soil and rich biodiversity which should not be ruined through contamination. Why should we depend on fertilizers which are chemically impure,” Singh said while appealing to the locals to make extensive use of organic vermicompost in their gardens and farms. He also suggested the villagers to use soil and other natural resources judiciously for the sake of future generations.
Meanwhile, a vermicompost unit sanctioned by the Directorate of Soil and Water Conservation, RWD has been installed on the farm of a local entrepreneur Boken Kino. Among others, SCO(S&WC) ND Pubiyang, ASCO (S&WC) G Siram, SSCA Talo Ekke also spoke on the occasion.
GBs, PRI leaders, villagers and other staff of the Directorate participated in the event.
