ITANAGAR, Mar 2: The family of Risso Tari, who was killed during the PRC unrest in the state capital has declined the state government’s compensation and demanded the responsible personnel to be handed over to them.
Tari, a youth hailing from Kurung Kumey district, was killed on February 21 when security personnel opened fire at protesters during the agitation over the contentious PRC issue.
“We demand the authorities to trace out the person who shot my brother within a week’s time and then hand over to us,” appealed Risso Kiagong, elder brother of the deceased while interacting with media persons here at Press Club on Saturday.
The state government has announced compensation of Rs. 20 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives in the firing and Rs. 10 lakh each for those injured during the protest.
Referring to the statement made by the Home Minister, who denied giving shooting order, Kiagong questioned “if the Home Minister did not issue any such order, who gave the direction to the security personnel to shoot at peaceful protesters?”
Calling it a case of “cold-blooded murder,” he said it was illegal and inhuman on the part of the chief of security management that day to issue shooting order unless there was an immediate threat to their lives from protesters.
“The use of firearms should be allowed only in extreme circumstances, and as a preventive measure, not as a punitive measure,” he argued.
Kiagong asserted that if the authority had adopted other crowd management measures to control the protesters, his brother would have been alive today.
On the state government’s decision to extend financial assistance worth Rs 20 lakh to his family and a government job, he categorically rejected the offer saying that no amount of money can compensate his brother's untimely death.
“We do not want any compensation from the government but justice for my brother. And justice will be delivered only when authority will hand over the guilty who killed my brother to us,” he added.
The family members further threatened to launch a rigorous democratic movement if the authority fails to do the same.
